Crypto, NFTs and Metaverse Trademark Applications to Rise in 2022: Report

The variety of US tokens associated to cryptocurrencies, non-fungible tokens (NFTs), Web3 and the Metaverse filed since January has reportedly surpassed these filed in 2021.

In response to information compiled Tuesday by mental property lawyer Mike Kondoudis, people and firms filed greater than 3,600 trademark functions for cryptocurrencies and crypto-related providers at the US Patent and Trademark Workplace as of Aug. 31, in comparison with 3,516 for all of 2021. Moreover, Kondoudis reported that the variety of NFT functions had risen even greater – greater than 5,800 in 2022 in comparison with 2,087 in 2021 – whereas the variety of trademark functions associated to Metaverse or Web3 had greater than doubled: 1,866 in 2021 and 4,150 in August 2022.

Thus far in 2022, over 5800 trademark apps have been filed with the USPTO for NFTs (and associated items/providers).

March information reportedly confirmed the biggest variety of functions in 2022 throughout all three software sorts, with 1,078 for NFTs, 604 for crypto, and 759 for the Metaverse, whereas July and August typically had the bottom variety of functions. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg introduced in March that the corporate Preparing to make NFTs available on Instagram.

Cointelegraph reported on Sept. 1 that luxury brand Hermès had filed a trademark application in the United States for use of its name in Metaverse, NFTs, and virtual currency after the company filed a lawsuit against MetaBirkins founder Mason Rothschild, alleging he was off the sale had benefited from NFTs using the company's Birkin brand name. Additionally, major firms inside and outside the crypto space, including Meta, Formula 1, Mastercard, McDonald's, Gatorade, and the US Space Force, have all filed with the USPTO in 2022 proposing virtual products or an interest in crypto and blockchain.
